- I have separated mechanical testing of materials, as opposed to structures ( i.e. where a scale or full-size structure such as a composite beam, bridge, aircraft wing, etc. is tested to destruction). Will require specialist knowledge to expand on structures.
- Do we attempt to correlate individual mechanical properties to the mechanical tests by which they are determined?
Mechanical test | Property | Symbol(s) | Notes |
---|---|---|---|
Tensile test | Young modulus | E | The gradient of the initial linear section of the derived stress-strain graph |
Tensile test | Yield stress, Proof stress | Rp, σy | |
Tensile test | Ultimate tensile stress | Rm | |
Tensile test | % elongation to failure | ||
Plane strain fracture toughness test | Plane strain fracture toughness | KIc | |
Vickers hardness test | Vickers hardness | HV |
